It was a great weekend for Rutgers University students at Powerzone’s grass tournament in Clifton on July 18 and 19.
Rutgers students Melissa Favis and Y.J. Tung won the Coed AA/A title, while Mark Gacki, a Rutgers student, teamed with Ramapo’s Josh Castillo won the men’s AA/A crown. Two 17-year-olds, Zach Sorenson and Paulo Guinto, won the men’s BB/B title, while Ryan Kelly and Mia Nuf captured the coed BB/B championship.
Y.J. and Melissa beat Bryan Wall and Kirsten Lechner 15-9 in a hard-fought reverse coed AA/A final. They went up 8-0, but in the sideout scoring format, Bryan and Kirsten were able to battle back. They came back to 8-5 before YJ and Melissa scored again, and two points by the Rutgers pair made it 10-5. The closest Bryan and Kirsten were able to get after that was 12-8.
Y.J. and Melissa had taken second in their pool, splitting two games with Bryan and Kirsten and Carlo Alberti and Becca Stranger. Bryan and Kirsten took first in that pool. Michael Campbell and Cheryl Vadas, who won the title at the first Powerzone grass tournament in June, won their pool at the event, but were eliminated in the semifinals, 15-7, by Y.J. and Melissa.
Bryan and Kirsten beat Carlo and Becca, 15-6, in the other semifinal. The teams of Paul Caper and Kiley Thierenger and Greg Jerolman and Lisa Braum finished in fifth place.
Ryan Kelly and Mia Nuf beat “Super” Dave Schulte and his sister, Denise Katzenberger in the BB/B final. Ann Lee Yuan and Adam Peck finished third in BB/B.
In the men’s division on Saturday, Mark and Josh beat Jordan Roldan and John Armstrong in the final. Mark and Josh beat Krys Pescinski and Pete Lysiak in the semifinals, while Jordan and John beat Parker Koladka and Adam Governale in the other semifinal. The teams of Michael Campbell and Kevin Froehlich and Ricardo Castro and Sergei Lykhochuv lost in the quarterfinals and finished fifth.
Zach Sorenson and Paulo Guinto beat Tyler Lee and Tobias Lewis in the men’s B final.
Powerzone will host another grass tournament at Robin Hood Park in Clifton on Aug. 29 (men’s and women’s doubles) and Aug. 30 (reverse coed).
