Charity grass tournament ends season

Hudson Valley Volleyball’s final tournament of the 2008 season will be a charity event to benefit Ron Pagliaro, the owner of Ron’s Ice Cream, one of Hudson Valley’s sponsors.

Many PowerZone regulars participate in the Hudson Valley events (PowerZone is also a sponsor of the tournaments), and Ron’s Ice Cream is near the Hudson Valley tournament site. Tournament participants over the years have received free ice cream there.

Ron has developed an unknown neurological disorder over the summer, resulting in loss of function of his legs. He had been hospitalized for a couple of months and is currently in rehab, hoping to return soon.

The tournament will be Sunday, Oct. 5 at Memorial Park, Beacon, N.Y. and will feature Mixed Fours (mens and//or womens) and reverse coed 2’s divisions.

There will be a concession stand, raffles, and t-shirt sales. All proceeds will go directly to Ron and his family.

For information and to register, go online to www.hvvolleyball.com, or call Frank, 845-564-1961.

MEN’S SIXES: Fred’s ReTreads Fly To First

September 26, 2008 by mthatcher · Leave a Comment

Between some fantastic setting and finding a middle with experience, Fred’s ReTreads’s climbed quickly after taking two matches in the Men’s Sixes Tuesday Night League. Their first win was over Rage, the team formally known as #1 in the league. The ReTreads then took UglyBall in 2 straight close games to hold the No. 1 spot after two weeks. Rage secured only 1 slip to 2nd by beating Kaboom in 2 see-saw games. Kaboom held on to 3rd by handing UglyBall a hard-fought 3 game defeat. Six Pak 17’s and Six Pak 18’s both moved up a spot registering 2 match wins each. While All The Kings Men also moved up a spot by upsetting GenEric’s DegErics. Next week features a rematch between Rage and Kaboom and a pivotal ReTread vs. UglyBall match.

New ladder system explanation

September 19, 2008 by fsiegle · Leave a Comment

Teams in the men’s sixes and coed fours leagues are a week into the new ladder standings system, and already there have been upsets that show why the system is so exciting. Basically, teams are playing to move up or fighting to hold their position every week.

In a conventional schedule, teams could build up a lead, then ”take a week/match off” - if they were ahead by enough in the win/loss column, there would be no pressure at times. With the ladder system, the top teams will have to defend their spot every match, every week.

Another benefit of the system is that every week, teams will be playing others of comparable strength. Even if you start as the lowest ranked team, if you don’t belong there, you will move up and EVERY team has a fair chance at moving up. As the weeks go on, the teams will settle in at the spots where they are competitive.

That also means that teams may play each other more than once if they change spots. But remember, that also happened in the conventional schedule, where there were divisions and teams played each of the others in their division two or three times as the schedule progressed. The drawback there was, that if a team was miss-placed into a division, they were stuck there for at least three weeks, until the reseeding portion of the schedule. Now, there’s a reseeding each week. Teams will shuffle into their proper spots, and each week the matchups should be more competitive all the way down the ladder.

Animaniacs, Cool Hwip make opening night moves!

September 19, 2008 by mthatcher · Leave a Comment

The glitz and pageantry of opening night never gets old! The New Powerzone Co-Ed Quads league’s inaugural season, using our new ladder standings system, is underway. The Buttheads held on to their top spot by winning both their matches. But don’t look back, Buttheads, because the Animaniacs are charging and gearing up for a showdown next week. Also on the move is Cool Hwip, after taking both matches in the same fashion - they lost the first game, then won the next two. Knuckle Up, Baltimore Badgers and Ugly Ball all dropped a spot. The rest of the league held their ground. Stay tuned!

Men’s league update

September 17, 2008 by fsiegle · Leave a Comment

We try our best to rank the teams before the season begins, but it’s always a little bit of a guessing game. In order to make the league as fair as possible, we want to allow every team a chance to win.
While running possibilities through the new schedule for the men’s 6s, we realized that it would be very hard for teams 7-11 to move up to the top, because they would have to take a very similar path.
This created somewhat of a bottle-neck for these teams, and we did not feel that it was fair to them if we had accidentally seeded more than one of them too low. Specifically, it appeared that they would all have to fight for the #7 rank in round 6 in order to get out of the bottom half. Therefore, we picked the least involved staff member, Maria, to correct this problem. She went ahead and adjusted the upcoming schedule without knowing the results of the games in rounds 1 and 2.
We believe that this will create a more fair schedule, and hopefully a more fun season for all of us!

The results from Week One already show what makes this system so exciting: Kaboom started as the sixth ranked team, but moved up to second with a victory over Fred’s Retreads. There were several other shifts, with the Generic Degenerates moving up to seventh with a win over All the Kings Men, and WML trading spots with Jambalaya.

This week the teams are split into three four-team groups, so check the schedule to make sure what time your team plays!

Coed league schedule

September 16, 2008 by fsiegle · Leave a Comment

The new coed league schedule is up. With an initial standing seeding by the League Manager (Mark). We went with 2 pools, with the upper pool consisting of 6 teams and the lower pool consisting of 8 for the first two weeks. In weeks three and four, the upper pool will have four teams, the middle pool will have six, and the lower pool will have four. The two formats alternate (2 divisions, then 3) in the final two weeks before the playoff. The final week will serve as seeding for the playoffs. As far as moving up or down, clearly the most important week is the next to last week. The weeks with 6 and 8 team divisions will allow for weeks with more variety of teams and matches, which allow for greater movement of teams up and down. The smaller grouping allows for the opposite, less diverse number of teams but probably more competitive matches. In effect, there will be a reseed every week!

The matches in the groups are also not a full round robin but selected matches. The schedule is pretty diverse. If the underdog wins its possible to have some unexpected results. However it shakes out the stronger teams will filter up to the top.

Stay tuned and lets see how it works out. Don’t take a week off!!

The top bracket will be playing 9pm & 10 pm matches. The lower grower groups will play 7 & 8 pm matches.

Men 6’s League Schedule

The new men’s league schedule is up. With an initial standing seeding by the League Manager (Mark). We went with 2 pools of 6 for the 1st two weeks followed with 3 pools of 4 in the 3rd week. Weeks 4,5 repeat with 2 pools of 6. The last week will be 3 pools of 4 and serve as a seeding for the play-offs. As far as moving up or down, clearly the most important week is the next to last week. Pools of 6 allow for more variety of teams and matches. It also allows for greater movement of teams up and down. The smaller grouping allows for the opposite, less diverse number of teams but probably more competitive matches. In effect, there will be a reseed every week!

If you look close the 2nd to last week of the schedule is important with potential 5th and 6th place teams breaking into gold and similar jumps in bronze to silver. Stay tuned and lets see how it works out. Don’t take a week off!!

The top bracket will be playing 9pm & 10 pm matches. The lower grower groups will play 7 & 8 pm matches.

New System for League Standings

September 13, 2008 by powerzonevb · Leave a Comment

PowerZone has come up with a new and exciting system for league standings. We will use head to head match-ups to determine the standings each week instead of using over all wins losses. Matches will count like never before, so make sure you bring your A-Game every night.

This is how it works

League Schedule: Teams will receive an initial seeding from the league manager to begin the first week.
Each week teams will be divided into groups (depending on the size of the league). For example: top half and bottom half or top third, middle third and bottom third. Each week you play matches with teams in your group. The schedule will be set for the season. Who you play will depend on your standings from the previous week.

For example: Week 1:

Round 1: 9pm 1v2, 3v4, 9pm 5v6, 7v8, 7pm 9v10, 11v12
Round 2: 10pm 1v4, 2v3, 10pm 5v8, 6v7, 8pm 9v12, 10v11
(Round 1 will not effect standings for Round 2)

Here is where it gets exciting!

League Standings: If your team defeats a higher ranked team, you will move into that team’s spot and the higher ranked team will then be pushed down one spot. If you lose to a higher ranked team no movement takes place.

Standings will be issued at the end of each week. Matches from round 1 will be recorded before round 2. In each round the standings will be adjusted starting with the lowest ranked team to the highest ranked team. Every match of every week now becomes very important. With a chance to jump up in standings each week for lower teams and top teams needing to hold their ground.
