Rage! topples Roman’s Empire to win men’s 4’s title

MVP Sean Mackey made several key plays in the second game to lead Rage! to a 18-25, 25-20, 15-9 victory over the Roman Empire in the Men’s 4’s championship match on Dec. 23.

Sean, the Rage! setter, had only two kills in the match but both came at important points in the second game. Rage had jumped out to a 15-8 lead, but a kill by Gary Curran and two Rage! errors had the Empire striking back to within 4, 15-11. Sean ended the run by hitting on two for one of his kills. Later, when the Empire had closed to 18-17, he had a solo block, one of his 6 blocks in the match, to give his team a 2-point lead. Then, with the score 20-20, he hit on two again for his second kill, followed that up with an ace for a 2-point lead, then had a dig that was converted into a kill by Christian Schuler off a set from Jared Houston.

A kill by Jared (10 for the match) and an Empire error finished off the game.

In Game 3, Rage! went up 12-7 on a combination block by Jared and Sean before Jon Brooks earned his 5th kill of the match to make it 13-8. Everyone contributed to the finish, with Jared earning a kill for the 14th point and Christian finishing things off with his 10th kill.

Jon also had 4 aces in the final for Rage!, while Christian added 2 blocks. Jared had 3 blocks and an ace.

The Empire had started off strong, following up it’s 3-game victory over Fred’s Retreads in the semis. Jack Henriques had a big finish against the Retreads, getting the team’s final 2 kills from setter Greg Grande before acing his opponents for the winning point. He then had the first 2 kills in the final for the Empire.

Gary had 13 kills and 2 blocks in the match, while Roman Stobnicki had 7 kills and 3 blocks.

LEAGUE NOTES

Western Penn won the Silver Division playoffs. … Roman Empire had been the No. 1 seed heading into the Gold playoffs. They beat The Anamaniacs in three games in the semis. Anamaniacs had a stellar season - they had been the No. 1 team in the ladder system for much of the year and went into the playoffs as the top seed. Bria Lovelace and Jamie Lee were two of their five players, the only women who played regularly in the men’s 4’s league.
